Craps - Sound Like a Pro: Part 4

A lot of the terminology you may hear in the game of craps is "slang," therefore it may be a name in place of something else that also constitutes a term you should know. And even though we are not going to sit here and tell you that it is absolutely essential to know all of it, you never know when it might all come in handy.

For instance, while rolling a 12 (which is two sixes) might be known as "box cars," you might be interested to know that in some circles, it is also known as "midnight." So you can put that in your pipe and smoke it, so to speak. When a veteran player speaks of "Little Joe," it is most likely not a fellow player, but instead a "Hard 4," which is a pair of twos in the dice. If you know what a "field bet" is, you might also classify it as a "Garden" bet, which seems to make at least a little sense. /p>

You can play with the shooter (the one rolling the dice) in the game of craps, or you can also play against him (or her, as it were). If you are doing that, you can also be known as a "Wrong Bettor," although you certainly won't always be wrong. The total of eleven (a 6 and a 5, which is the only way it can be) is sometimes referred to as "Yo-Eleven," or if you are really into brevity, simply "Yo." This presumably is to avoid the confusion with a "seven" being called out audibly.

This won't occur in the virtual game of craps, but in the land-based game there are invariably going to good tippers. And one will sometimes be referred to as a "George," although the bills with George Washington on them don't tend to be very attractive to dealers unless they come in multiples. A tip is also considered a "toke," which is something you can learn within minutes after arriving in Las Vegas. Oh, and by the way, if you are throwing dice you are throwing "bones." Don't forget that.

If you win a bet, you may just want to leave it out there and make it, in effect, a double wager. This would be called "letting it ride," and it certainly is not something that is specific to craps. If it is not a "one-roll" bet; that is to say, the outcome is not decided after a single roll, you might step in and double the bet, in which case you are "pressing" it.
